But the Israelis will be hard pressed to remain amongst the leaders, having to face up against top bowlers from England and Scotland in the games yet to follow during the day. The European Bowls Union was formed in 1995 with its main purpose to promote the development of bowls on the European continent. Eight nations participated in the first tournament in 1997, the four U.K. countries with Jersey, Guernsey, Spain and Holland. Israel joined the second tournament in 1999 together with Portugal, Cyprus and The Isle Of Man, and with two additional sides entered - a "European select" and a "President select," the tournament has been catering for 14 teams. This year sees two new entries, Germany and Turkey, and while the Turkish team appears to be expatriates, the German foursome contains three homegrown players. The next tournament could well see Denmark and France participating, the two already active in promoting the game. The European Union, it will be remembered, unanimously turned down an invitation from Malaysia when players from Israel were excluded.
