PortugalA new Crown Green Bowls club is about to open in the sunny Algarve in the most luxurious surroundings. The new Amendoeira Bowls Club near historic Silves in the Algarve, Portugal will be opening in March 2009. It has two grass greens, one flat green which is 40 metres square and one crown green which is 37 metres square. The official opening of the Bowls Club will includea week-long tournament with both a crown green and a flat green competition from Monday 16th March to Friday 20th March, and an inauguration prize giving dinner on the final evening at the prestigious Amendoeira clubhouse. There is decent prize money on offer too, with a total prize money fund of over £5,000 to be won over the two competitions.

The new Amendoeira Bowls Club is based at the luxury Oceânico Amendoeira Golf Resort just 35 minutes from Faro airport. The resort itself is new and the golf courses were officially opened in October 2008. The crown green and the flat green are both situated next to the breath taking clubhouse, with fabulous views across the Oceânico Faldo and Oceânico O’Connor golf courses. The resort will also boast a Sports Centre comprising 6 tennis courts, a football pitch, 2 7-a-side football pitches, a gymnasium, 9 hole pitch and putt, kids’ playground, shop and café bar.

Top UK players from crown green have been invited to the competition as the crown green is the first one to be built along the Iberian Peninsular, and is the first proper crown green to be built outside the UK.

The format of the competitions will be that of a pairs competition on the flat green and a singles competition on the crown green, and it will be possible to enter both competitions if you are feeling energetic.

Competitors on the flat green will be playing for the Oceânico Prestige Pairs Trophy which has a first prize of £1,000 sterling going to the winning pair. Each pair are guaranteed 4 days of competition. During the first 3 days, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday, each pair will play 2 games of 9 ends against different opposition. There will be a points system and the top 16 pairs will go forward to the final on the Friday. Those that do not make the top 16 will go into the consolation competition on the Thursday.

On the crown green singles competition, the players will be competing for the Iberian Crown Green Inauguration Cup with a prize of £1,000 for the winner. On the crown green, there is guaranteed prize money for the top 32 players. The format here is for each player to be in a group of 4 players. One game of 15 up is played each day (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday) against a different player in the group. The top players of each group will go through to the final on the Friday and the bottom players of each group will play in the consolation trophy on Thursday.

The presentation of the trophies and prizes will be made at the inauguration prize giving dinner on the Friday evening at the Amendoeira Clubhouse.
