Forse, formerly a Gloucester player, edged through 21-20 against John Hanmer of Shildon in the first round, reached the quarter-finals with a 21-11 victory over Croydon's Ted Barlow, then defeated two-times winner Bill Bell, from Stanley, 21-18.
The winner of the West Country semi-final on Tuesday will set up a final encounter with either Cumbria's John Crozier or Pat Watford, from Tye Green (Harlow). Westlecot's Ellen Bolland, Josie Lloyd and Doreen Woodley, and Bristol's Roz Constant, Joyce Parslow and Susan Osborne reached the quarter-finals of the women's national triples championships, but could not get past Wey Valley and Nottingham respectively. Robert Weale, ranked No 9 in the world, ran into form at Bristol yesterday, when he notched up wins against Chris Young, Jason Greenslade and Simon Skelton in this week's instalment of the bwin.com Super8series. The classy Welshman won the first set in the final, 7-4, but ran out of steam as Young leveled with a 5-4 victory in the second set, and it was the Surrey star who edged the tie-break, 2-1.
